Time to Stand Down: COVID-19 in the Cockpit

I am reproducing here a section of an editorial written by Bob Meder, chairman of the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI): “Last week in this space, I suggested Covid-19 safe practices in the flight instruction environment. I wrote that in the optimistic hope that it would be sufficient. It’s not. With the guidance of health professionals from both public health agencies and in private practice and with the goal of helping “flatten the curve” in mind, it’s time to reassess. Some may disagree, but I believe it’s time to stand down and refrain from in-cockpit flight instruction until we have broken the back of this pandemic. I say this because I cannot imagine a way of practicing any form of social distancing within the confines of an aircraft cockpit.”

At the same time, NAFI and several industry members are offering free or deep discounts on instructional materials, including flight simulators and test preparation software for both flight instructors and for student pilots. The NAFI archives are accessible to everyone.

GLEIM AVIATION has partnered with Laminar Research to provide an introductory version of the Gleim X-Plane Flight Training Course and the full version of X-Plane 11 for a limited time at no charge. This digital download includes the full version of X-Plane 11 and is functional only through June 30, 2020. Aviation Supplies & Academics (ASA) offers discounts on prep ware. There are many many ways to advance your aviation-relevant knowledge using on-line tools and courses during a time that requires social distancing to stay healthy. If we all stick to best practices we will come out of this crisis in a couple of weeks.
